Moldovan wine was appreciated by Londoners on their home turf

February 26, 2008

On February 26th, Angelus restaurant in London played host to the Moldova Wine Guild for an open wine tasting targeting British wine consumers. Harper's Wine & Spirit Weekly helped to organize the event, which was attended by important wine buyers, wine critics, and journalists who expressed great interest in Moldova's wine and optimism about the prospects for Moldovan wine in the UK.

"There were two aims to be to considered while organizing these tasting.„, according to Angela Muir MW, who works as a consultant winemaker for one of the Guild's member wineries, “You need to help unrepresented companies find an agent/importer/representative in the destination country, and to show off wines that are already being imported to the press. People coming to the tasting are not just evaluating Moldova; they are evaluating the comparative success of each wine and each company." she noted.

Dr. Jason K. Aldiss, Managing Director for Eville & Jones, expert in European food safety, said, "The wines were extremely interesting with the whites tending to be better received, and, in particular, the Chardonnays. I found most of the reds slightly on the off-dry side tending to sweet. Most of these wines whilst pleasant would need a different approach from what the standard British palate would expect — the exceptions with regard to this point are those wines designed more specifically for the English market."

A higher interest from participants has been shown to the methods of wine production and regions of Moldova where it was made.
